La productividad del cultivo de arroz se ha incrementado en los últimos 15 años de modo significativo, a una tasa de 128 kg/ha/año (Pérez de Vida 2010, 2011). En el período se ha consolidado el uso de cultivares de alto potencial (por ej El Paso 144, INIA Olimar), y la adopción de prácticas de manejo
mejoradas (por ej. fechas de siembra e inicio del riego más temprano, Blanco et al 2011), en un contexto de alta adopción de otras tecnologías de protección y nutrición del cultivo. La universalización de estas prácticas culturales ha permitido la capitalización de condiciones climáticas favorables (mayor radiación y menor incidencia de bajas temperaturas en estadios reproductivo) que han afectado positivamente la expresión del rendimiento en los últimos años de la serie. Sin embargo, la identificación de parámetros climáticos como las variables significativamente asociadas a las variaciones en rendimiento (Pérez de Vida 2011), supone un relativo agotamiento del paquete tecnológico que podría impactar en las tasas de ganancias en el futuro cercano. El presente trabajo explora el potencial productivo a través de rendimientos experimentales y a nivel comercial y su relación (brecha tecnológica), así como su evolución (reserva tecnológica), con el objetivo de identificar oportunidades y desafíos productivos en el sector arrocero del Este del País. |

ABSTRACT.
This study analyses variability and trends of atmospheric evaporative demand (AED) across Uruguay in the past four decades. Changes were assessed using pan evaporation measurements from 10 meteorological stations and compared to PenPan model calculations, which is a physically based model that employs meteorological data as input. Results demonstrate a high agreement between the observed AED and those estimated from the PenPan model. Both observations and model estimations agree on a high interannual variability in AED, though being statistically insignificant (p>0.05) at seasonal and annual scales. Given that AED shows high sensitivity to changes in relative humidity and sunshine duration, as a surrogate of solar radiation, the lack of significant trends in the AED observations and estimations over Uruguay can be linked to the insignificant trend found for these climate variables for the period from 1973 to 2014. This is the first study that reports Pan evaporation trends for this part of the world, helping to infill gaps for mid-latitude Southern Hemisphere areas, which are
poorly represented in Pan evaporation trends.
